Should public schools teach morals? Morals I believe in are truthfulness, trustworthiness, modesty, and faithfulness because I was brought up in a Christian home. Other people may have had different religious upbringings, however. Because of this, one set of morals cannot be listed by one set of people to teach a diverse group of students. Patents should teach morals. Schools should teach facts. With the decline of the family unit and increased immorality on television, the collapse of society is the main cause for the question of morals being taught in school. Teaching morals in public school is just an "easy fix" for society's problems.
             If you get past the fact that teaching morals is just a temporary solution for society's problems, there's the question of how to teach them without affirming a particular religion. It's been proposed that all classrooms post a list of the Ten Commandments. Not all students are Christian. Other religions have their own types of commandments and why shouldn't we post those in our schools? Because these are public schools run by the government. Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and atheist tax money pays for us to go to public school and the separation of church and state, as expressed in the Constitution, is intended to prevent the government, under pressure from the majority, from dictating one theology over another.
             This brings me to another question. If morals were taught in school, who has the authority to say what values are to be taught? It couldn't be left up to the teachers because they would use their own religion as basis for the morals. God help us if the government and politicians sets the guidelines for the morals taught in school. We would all be going around cheating on our spouses, stealing from the less fortunate, and lying to the people who trust us with their safety.
