             Our country has become increasingly concerned with the needs of its disabled and elderly citizens. The Congress passed the ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) to provide equal access to public buildings by the handicapped. In addition, all buildings are required to provide special parking stalls, ramps, and bathrooms for these people. These parking stalls imparticulary(is this a word cause my spell check says it is misspelled), must be of a larger size, and must be within close proximity to the entrance. These stalls may only be used by disabled persons with a government issued parking permit.
             My grandfather has lived in Florida for the past twelve years. He has had no problem traveling up north to visit with us several times each year. Last year my grandfather unfortunately suffered a stroke, along with a fall, which confined him to a wheel chair. Despite this new handicap, he insisted on making the trip to visit with us this past Christmas. This was a difficult trip and may have been the last time he was capable of making such a journey.
             In order to make my grandpa's stay more pleasant, as well as more convenient, my mother applied for a temporary handicapped parking permit from the Ramsey Police Department. Since it was Christmas time, this permit would be especially helpful in assisting my mother in taking my grandfather along on her daily errands. There were also different church functions and school events that my grandfather wished to attend. In addition to my Grandfather having a great deal of difficulty walking, he was also uncomfortable in the cold winter temperature of New Jersey. The ability to park close to a building entrance would allow my grandfather to get out of the cold as quickly as possible.
