Great Gatsby

             In everyone's life, there are things that are wished to be said and secret yearnings to act a certain way, yet these desires and actions can only be expressed once the security of being in a group becomes an option. In The Great Gatsby, the characters and the society in which they live are shadowed by a false idea that the only thing that they truly value is money and prestige. However, there is actually something deeper that each person craves, such as love, happiness, and the value of time in regards to their lives. These values become exceedingly apparent when a chance for the characters to be together occurs.
             The society in which Carraway becomes associated with is, on the surface, a group of people enamored by a man that few knew anything about, and therefore people felt a need to gossip, "there were whispers about him from those who found little that it was necessary to whisper about in this world." (p 48) This group of people also felt that by knowing this prestigious man Gatsby, whom some referred to as an "Oggsford man," (p 76) and "a perfect gentleman," (p 76) then they were allowed to be privy to this exclusive world of illusion that Gatsby had created. However, looking past this simplistic idea of parasitism that these people displayed, they were actually trying to find happiness through the pure joy that Gatsby was providing through his parties and by allowing these people to come in, "with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission." (p 45) People wanted to experience a place free from adult burdens and enjoy a place pure and childlike.
             After Gatsby and Daisy are reunited after their five-year separation, they both feel a strong love for each other, which is why Daisy says, "You know I love you." (p123) However, there is a separation between them as well, because of their different values on life. Gatsby values the happiness that they once had...
