Media Violence

In my personal opinion, I do believe media violence can definitely have an effect on people. The reason I say this is because there's many cases that I think shows it does. For example the show Jackass. I was watching 20/20 and there was a story about a kid who accidentally lit himself on fire because he was copying a stunt from there show. This is a good example of the Cathartic effect; people release violent inclinations by seeing them portrayed. Another case is the Columbine shootings. These kids came from good backgrounds but yet they did such violent things. In one news report it was said that when they came into school it looked like the Matrix. They were wearing trenchcoats and they had these big guns. It was also said that the Matrix was a movie they watched a lot so that is considered in my opinion Aggressive stimulation. This means that people are inspired to violence from media depictions. The next example I am going to talk about is myself. I like action movies so I see a lot of violence and shows these days have a lot of violent depictions but when I see them I really don't think much of it because I am so used to seeing it on T.V. This a perfect example of the Desensitizing theory. This means that the tolerance of real-life grows because of media-depicted violence. Today it is very hard to avoid some sort of violent or endangering act on T.V so these different terms and theories could apply to a lot of people.
