The mask's description as "grave" stands out to the reader, it almost has a death-like allusion. This mask could also aid in repression of feelings the woman has experienced, it's just another way to maybe ease into her soul; armor is an important tool to have when entering into unknown places because it can help conceal weaknesses. A ladder that is "hanging innocently" ( 15) offers support for those who know about it, but don't have the strength to jump right into the water.
