Multiculturalism, is very back bone of the country that we live in.
The united States from its very earliest existence has been a
melting pot of different cultures. Immigrants have always gone to
life threating extents to immigrate to this country to find a better
life. In the film El Norte and, the autobiographical novel A
Puerto Rican in New York by Jesús Colón. That very
blending of cultures that is displayed though out both works.
Both of the above mentioned works are tales of immigrant who
immigrate to the United States in extremist circumstances.
The film El Norte was released in 1983, it made a very big
statement because it was the first to portray Latin Americans in
a assertive position. They were taking charge of their situation
and making it better for them selves. The two main characters in
this film were Arturo and Rosa they were Mayan Indian
peasants from Guatemala. Their situation in their village was
horrid and plagued with violence. Their parents and many
members of their village had been murdered by the national army.
They fled on a long journey to Mexico over much rough terrain
on foot. When they enter Mexico the two then take a long, hot,
and grueling bus ride to a town near the border of Mexico and
the United States. When they arrive at they border town they
are fooled by some one who takes advantage of them. He gets
them caught by the US border patrol, then they are them sent
back to Mexico. When they are returned to Mexico they
commence looking for a friend from their village. Who is know to
bring people over the border to the United States. When they
find the village friend he agrees to help them across the border.
The two siblings then begin their long journey though an old
sewage pipe. They must crawl on their hands and knees over
many miles, with rats who attack them.
