Theme for English B

             One of the best literary writers of the 20th Century would indeed have to be Langston Hughes. His works over the years have been astonishing and yet even today admirers of his writings still read every piece of work like it was the first time it was ever written. In his poem entitled, Theme for English B, Hughes tells the story of a student (perhaps him) who has to write a paper for an English and Literature course. The argument that I thought he was trying to convey was that no matter who we are or where we are from we are all the same.
             In the poem Hughes opens up with the professor giving the assignment much like professors still do today, but the task was to write a page. That sounded pretty simple but that page had to be a page that was derived from deep inside the mind of each student. In line 6, Hughes begins to beg the question, "I wonder if it's that simple?"
             When the student gets home he begins to look around his home and his neighborhood for inspiration. He begins to see exactly where he is from and he recognizes how proud he is to be who he is. It is during this time in the story that our protagonist starts to break down the racial barrier that he feels is keeping things so divided.
             The student feels that he and Harlem are as one in a common bond to reach an unreachable goal. The student now believes that we are all the same because he knows he is black but he not only likes the music that most blacks like but he finds himself listening to Bop music as well as Bach. In those times most African Americans did not listen to classical music or teen bopper music.
             The main argument of this poem was that we are all equal. No one should be persecuted or put down for liking other things that might be "outside of their race", because that would go against our first amendment rights.
