Globalization

             Traveling throughout the world, an American slowly begins to realize that the tag "world's superpower" comes with its price: most of the world's countries view the individual's home region with animosity. A man who had ventured to foreign nations only three years previous, he is shelled at the drop in American image within these countries. Once sympathetic following September 11, countries across the globe have begun to skeptically view Americans' interventions within other areas of the world. Walking down sidewalks in various European countries, he hears whispers about the U.S.'s drive to control Iraq's oil for personal benefit. In an attempt to realize the full depths of this hatred, the man decides to travel to the general area of where this invasion is taking place: the Middle East. There, the man realizes that negative feelings encompass greater ideas than the "theft" of oil. Middle Easterners seemingly loathe every aspect of American culture and believe the "world's superpower" is attempting to force this culture on other nations through democratization. With the public perception of America on a sharp decline, it is apparent that the old way of public diplomacy is failing to accomplish its goal. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a new set of thinking on this issue, one that according to John Clark is a challenge of combining global and local public policy into a term known as glocal. Contrasting from the traditional government to government interaction of diplomacy, this new measure highlights the importance of individual work from citizens, including us here in Indianapolis. Working as small cohesive units such as church groups, medical groups, student groups, etc., the challenge calls for an abandonment of the past habit of propaganda through the government and focuses on groups working together to culturally influence other nations.
