Mary Reilly

In comparing the novel of Mary Reilly to the motion picture I noticed a few differences in the two such as the slightly changed narrative. In the first scene of the novel, to begin with, we are introduced immediately to Mary's childhood horror from her point of view. This gives the reader a feeling of closeness to Mary right off the bat. On the other hand, in the movie, the beginning starts out with more of a 3rd person point of view generally going about the house viewing the many duties of the servants throughout the house. By doing this, the feeling of being inside of Mary's thoughts is lost. In my opinion this was a strong characteristic of the novel. Without the first person's point of view present in this movie, which I personally believe is possible in film (A Beautiful Mind); much of the initial intention of the novel is lost. Though as the film progresses we do start to see a little more of Mary's point of view, though more subjective, such as the reflection of her childhood which takes place at a different time than in the novel. Another difference in the syzhuet, or systematic order of events, is the placement of the bloody handkerchief. In the novel it is placed more "strategically" within the storyline, where the basis of the story is already known so the reader can put their own thoughts into the story, whereas in the movie it seems to be used more as a way to gain the attention of the audience, seeing that it is placed in the very beginning where the setting had not yet been established. I think the director does this strictly in order to set up the movie and to capture the audience's attention by making the setting more dramatic.
Besides the differences in the order of events, I also noticed a difference in the way Mrs. Faradays house was presented to the audience. The way we see it in the novel completely differs from the way it is portrayed in the mo
