The other communities are similar to Jonas, the only differences are the style of their dwellings or the timetables of the school. In addition the other communities differ in some unimportant rules but generally speaking live is the same in every community in order to guarantee sameness. It is not very common to travel to other communities, though there are some trips organized by school for the children or visits by adults because of their work. But people do not stay long there, life refers to the own community and things going on there. These visits do not seem necessary, but people get an experience of another community, that everything is the same indeed. So people do not wonder about what lies outside their community and whether there can be a different way of life. It is a way to keep peoples mouth shut of queer ideas.
On the one hand Elsewhere is seen as a world like ours, but only of Jonas and the Giver who experienced that life in their memories. It is described to have hills and mountains just as valleys and plains. There are more trees, thicker and of various kinds, in some places forming dark forests. Of course there are wild flowers and other plants too. Everything is just the way it grows, is different to the well-ordered community. Furthermore there are animals living in the woods and birds flying over the sky.
There is no climate control. The weather changes from sunshine to rain and storm, snow is falling as well and as a consequence temperature is rising and falling.
People living Elsewhere are able to see colors and to hear music. They wear different clothes and have different looks. Having no sameness they are able to choose everything.
