"A Summer Tragedy"

             In Arna Bontemps "A Summer Tragedy" we were introduce to a old couple Jeff and Jennie Patton. This couple had no one left in the world but each other, so to relieve each other of the burden of taking care of one another they made a profound decision to end their lives.
             Jeff was a share farmer he's recovering from a stroke and he's afraid of what would happen to his wife is he get another stroke. Jennie is blind and has a "wasted, dead- leaf" appearance; she's also as "scrawny and gnarled as a string bean". She also used to smile at her husband more when she had teeth.
             After talking about there future they decided to end their life instead of becoming burden to each other. They decided the best way to do this was to drive their car into the river. On the way to the river Jennie notice her husband was trembling, he was frightened about the trip. She asked him if he was afraid and he assures her he wasn't. She didn't believe him and tries to assure him he shouldn't be afraid and their decision was the right one. All the while her own fear was creeping up on her.
             During the ride to the river many taughts were going through Jeff mind. He taught about his children. He taught about the pain he and Jennie couldn't forget after losing all five of their grown children within two year. The lost of their children was the main reason for their decision. He taught about his own strength, his job and his friend. He taught about his trip fifty years ago, when he went to Mardi Gras with his friend. He taught about how young he was then and how old he is now, and what would happen to Jennie if he get another stroke and leave her alone to take care of himself. With that taught all his fear and doubts went away and he drove his car into the river as planned.
             Although suicide is wrong. In this case I understand Jeff and Jennie decision. They understood their situat...
