The others like Hugh, Alan Breck and the strange man who Jenny encounters during a lonely walk are not directly involved with Jean Brodie. This is because only Jenny saw the strange man and it affected only herself and her best friend Sandy Stranger. Alan Breck is a character from the novel "Kidnapped" by R.L. Stevenson. Alan Breck is an imaginary character in Sandy's mind; she pretends to have conversations with him. Finally, Hugh was Jean Brodie's old love. Jean Brodie tells about her love life to her pupils, she talks about Hugh to them but because this story was told by Jean Brodie we readers do not know whether this is a true story or whether Jean Brodie just invented it to impress her students.
             As I said before, Jean Brodie is a teacher in her prime; this means that she is probably around thirty years of age. She has quite a strong character; she does not give up very easily.
