ot; children over a cliff to die is a far cry from a state of democracy. Nowhere in a democratic and humane society would execution of children be allowed to happen. The education system is another prime example that identifies Sparta's communist state. The children of Sparta were taught to read and write, but all other training was physical (Michell 180). To explain, "the boys lived very hard-they slept in dormitories on rushes which they had to cut themselves without knives"(Jones 35). Children in a democratic society are able to enjoy their freedoms and enjoy their childhood. It is apparent that children of Sparta were not allowed to indulge in their own childhood activities. Even after completion of school people were controlled by the state, in that the men were to serve in the military, until the age of sixty (Preston 21). It is obvious from these facts that the state ran the lives of the Spartans as early as their birth. To sum it up, even a basic institution like education and the enforcement of men to adhere to military duty was used to ensure Sparta's communist state and creation of her warriors.
