Robots take over! Karel Capek's R.U.R. and Fritz Lang's Metropolis display similar elements including the allusions, characterizations, and plot points. Both works are written around the same time period, although R.U.R was written in 1921 and Metropolis was written in 1927. Germany is the main origin from which R.U.R's and Metropolis' backgrounds are found. Direct comparisons can be made throughout the works to complement one another on the themes. Allusions are one of the major comparisons that are used to make the works similar.
             Both R.U.R. and Metropolis present several similar allusions that trace an origin back to the bible. In Metropolis, the workers cause a terrible flood, which causes the destruction of the entire city. Along with this flood, R.U.R. also presents the readers with a major flood. The robots flood the island and surround a building, while the workers are inside watching this horrific action take place. The floods allow the people in both the play and movie to have a fresh start in their lives. Both of these incidents of a flood allude back to The Great Flood in the bible. In R.U.R., there is talk about how the robots should have been made to look different, so that they could not work well together. In the movie, Maria preaches about The Tower of Babel. These particular statements allude to the Tower of Babel, which also takes place in the Bible. While allusions are evident, characterizations are subtler.
             A number of characters in both works represent each other by their actions and personalities. Maria and Helena are a correlate in their thinking of how to view and solve dilemmas. Both ladies are the peace makers in their given roles. They are against any type of violence and would opt on working out compromises.
