With the technoloy the world has accomplished today, education is at American's fingertips. The invention of the internet made information conveniently just a click away. Such advances are pushing people as a whole ahead of their times, yet pushing other individuals back. The internet, one of the largest resources the world has today, consist mostly of text which requires a person to be able to read. If a person is unable to read or has some sort of reading impairment this is only going to discourage that person from trying. How do experts decipher between the reading impaired and the undedicated reader?
Considering that reading is a severe problem in schools these days, the methods of reading is a aspect that should be looked at. Topics in class such as sight words, decoding, and phonological skills are some the most important. I will discuss a couple of points relating a students reading ability to being learning disabled.
Proficiency in word identification has been linked to a normal continuum rather than clearly separating poor readers from those with specific learning disabilities in reading (e.g. Shaywitz, Escobar, Shaywitz, Fletcher, & Makuch, 1992). To get to the bottom of this an experiment was preformed (fuchs, Fuchs, Mathes, Lipsey, & Eaton, 2000) to see if they could see a difference between students with learning disabilities and low achieving students. What they found was students with learning disabilities were significantly more impaired than the low achieving students when a time restraint was placed upon them. I can relate to this having gone through years of schooling and always getting stressed over the time constraints. Now, thanks to the DRC and special education department I can have adaptations to help me in my least restrictive environment.
Students with learning disabilities in reading tend to have more than one disability. Such as phonological-core deficit and a naming deficit or a doubl...
