Whether animal research is justified has been a popular topic in the contemporary society. Tom Regan, the distinguished philosopher, asserts that animals should not be sacrificed for human's welfare. Regan also claims that exploitation of animals should be abolished. Nevertheless, Jan W. Guzek and Carl Cohen support animal researches. From my perspective, I agree with Cohen and Guzek because animal research can not only benefit human beings and animals, but also be still indispensable now; Moreover, most animal experiments are not as cruel as people imagine.
             Regan suggests that the use of animal must be completely stopped because "animal are not our tasters" ( The Animal, p 212). However, he ignores the fact that almost all medical advancements are based on animal research. In the book, "Experimenting with Humans and Animals", Anita Guerrini describes the discovery of blood circulation, the development of vaccines, and recent AIDS research. According to her book, I believe those important discoveries and developments are all based on animal research. As a result, the benefits from animal research are beyond the loss of animals' lives.
             Furthermore, some people might suggest that animal subjects can be replaced by other nonliving objects ad the development of techniques. Nevertheless, according Cohen, animal research will never be replaced because the safety and efficacy of a new drug or procedure must be verified on living organisms (The Animal, p. 70). As a participant of animal experiments, Jan W. Guzek admits that verifying new drugs or surgical techniques on animals has been a rule in medical field (Human, section 3). Animal research will not likely disappear from our life. Therefore, any further process of biomedical research will still be based on live animal experimentation in the future.
