Now, members must be recommended by two people who are members and must have a resume of past movie credits that are acceptable in the eyes of the Academy (Osbourne 8). Unfortunately, what has happened is that people who vote for best director may not have the best credentials and may not be really qualified to make that decision. Also, what is worse is that the person who is by far the best director may not win because the movie or the director is not acceptable to the Academy. The Academy maintains a rulebook of standards that they expect the voters to go by in choosing the best director ("74th" 4).
             The Academy expects the members to choose the winner for best direction not only by how well the director actually directs the picture, but also by how well the movie he directs fits into the way that the Academy wants to represent itself. The Academy encourages voters to not vote for the directors of movies in the genres of horror and comedy. They also want the voters to avoid voting for directors of pictures that contain extreme violence or sexual situations. They urge the members to vote for movies that make the audience feel good when they leave the theatre, or are examples of the American way (Osbourne 2). Along with these restrictions, the Academy is extremely image conscious. They make sure not to vote for a director who might in any way be controversial, professionally or personally.              still trust in their decision-making while maintaining an upright status amongst its peers.
