             Summary: Lieutenant Henry was an ambulance driver who met Catherine Barkley, a nurse, when he agreed to go with his friend, Rinaldi, to see her. The two talked and began to see more of each other until Henry went back to the front. He was wounded when their camp was shelled. So Henry was taken off the front and put into a field hospital. Afterwards he was moved to an American hospital in Milan, which was not ready for any patients. Once the doctor came back, Henry's leg was operated on and recovered. It just so happened that Catherine was working there. The two became even closer and pretended that they were married. When Miss Van Campen found liquor bottles belonging to Henry, he lost his leave and had to go back to the front. Catherine was already pregnant
             Back at the front it was not long, before retreat began. Henry's assignment was to take four men with three cars loaded with hospital equipment. The retreat line was slow and many times the line completely stopped for hours. Bonello picked up two sergeants in his car and Aymo as virgin family, two sisters. Henry decided that it would be quicker if they took a detour, so they separated from the rest. When Aymo's car had gotten stuck in the soft earth, Henry ordered the two sergeants to cut brush, but all they said was that they had to go. He ordered them to halt, but they ignored him so he shot one of them and Bonello finished him off. The other one got away. The stuck car was abandoned, the other two were later stuck, and here he sends the virgin family back to the main highway and the rest walked. Amyo was shot and Bonello surrendered. Piani and Henry made it back to the retreat, but Henry was taken out to be questioned by the carabinieri. Here he jumped into the river and deserted the army.
