904 the situation became worse when Mabel was diagnosed with diabetes, which was an incurable ailment at the time. After she died exhausted on November 14, 1904 Ronald and his brother were given to the custody of Father Francis Morgan (Doughan).
             In 1908 the boys were moved into lodgings where Ronald fell in love with Edith Bratt. Soon afterward, Father Francis stepped in and forbid Ronald to see or even correspond with Edith for three years (Grace). Many years later he wrote recalling "our goodnights when sometimes you were in your little white nightgown" (Jerome). At that point Ronald had started to master his linguist gift by becoming fluent in Latin and Greek. He also had started to develop his own language for fun and was part of the "T.C.B.S." (Tea Club, Barrovian Society) named after the meeting place where they read each other's literary works until 1916 (Carpenter).
             In 1911 Ronald attended Exeter College, Oxford where he later mastered Welsh, Anglo-Saxon, the Classics, Old English, the Germanic languages, and Finnish.
