El, Yahweh, The Cannonites and Israel
             If one decided to study the concept of Yahweh, from his beginning, and the premise that is Yahweh, one would be able to find many ties to the Cannonite idea of El. The concept of El can be seen in how EL and Yahweh are both identified, in characteristics that El and Yahweh share, and even the name Israel shows the concept of El.
             First we must understand who El was to the Cannonites. To the Cannonites, El was the highest power. El was the father of all the lesser deities. El was worshiped as the main god of their religion. He was seen as a functional and superstitious god. El was in like Yahweh, except in the Cannonite religion there were other god's. For instance, El was the father of Baal. Baal would later become the main god of enemies of Israel, and compete with Yahweh for the love of Israel's people.
             The covenant was the act that separated El from Yahweh. Yahweh, the patron god of Israel was derived from El. This is evident because the people of Israel came from Cannon. After the covenant, Israel took the concept of El and changed it into Yahweh, only one god, who was all powerful, but also vengeful and jealous of other gods. This all-powerful Yahweh however, was still much like Cannon's concept of El. Even in Yahweh's titles, he is El Roi, El Shaddia and Elohim, the father of the years, compassionate and the father of human kind. All three names incorporate the concept of El. The story of El creating the world predates the creation stories in Genesis. Early Israelites took over temples to El in Bethel, Shechem and other Cannon cities. This shows that when the Israelites came through Cannon, after taking over shrines to El, they incorporated many of the principles of El into the concept of Yahweh. Yahweh is essentially El, the only difference is that Yahweh is a monotheistic god and El is a part of a polytheistic religion.
