Abigail Williams, In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, remains consistent and does not change over the course of the play. Abigail's evil and manipulative personality remains unchanged even when innocent people are on the brink of death because of her false accusations. Abigail is responsible for the chaos that has fallen upon Salem.
             Abigail's insensitivity and cruelness are noticed early in the play. Betty, who is a sick child, screams out for her mother. Abigail replies, "Your mama's dead and buried." Instead of comforting a sick child Abigail responds unsympathetically and tells Betty that her mother can no longer help her.
             Abigail uses her beauty and seductive ways to get what she wants. Having relations with John Proctor in the past, Abigail tries to seduce him once again. She tells him, "you loved me then and you do now." Abigail's love for John and jealousy of his wife Elizabeth, causes Abigail to make it her goal to take Elizabeth's place as the wife of John. Abigail portrays her hypocrisy when she tells Mary Warren, "envy is deadly sin," because Abigail is envious of Elizabeth.
             Abigail creates havoc in Salem. She has falsely accused innocent people of practicing witchcraft and some have lost their lives. This has no affect on Abigail. Abigail continues with her accusations by taking it to the extremity of stabbing herself in hope of framing Elizabeth. "Goody Proctor always kept poppets", she tells the court trying to hint that Elizabeth stabbed her through some kinds of witchcraft.
             As the play comes to an end Abigail has an opportunity to change and tell the truth. However she chooses not to and tells Judge Danforth, "I've done my duty pointing out the Devils people." Even when the towns most respectable people are about to die, she lies to the court once more sticks with her accusations.
