Pornography is defined as the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writings) intended to cause sexual excitement. Pornography, however, is not as tame as this definition would leave an individual to believe. Pornography is a danger to our society and should be censored. In order to prevent the dangers that pornography causes we need to keep this material out of the hands of individuals.
A major reason pornography should be censored is because it is detrimental to our society. Our society has become increasingly liberated sexually since the 1950s. People would have been outraged in the past with what is generally accepted in this day and age as respectable advertising or television programs. This has not come with out a cost. Researchers have shown that regular exposure to pornography can lead to rape and child molestation. In one study, eighty-six percent of convicted rapists confessed to regular use of pornography, with fifty-seven percent acknowledging that they tried to reenact a pornographic scene during the rape (Olsen). Pornography has a detrimental effect on our societies attitude towards sex. It decreases the value we place on sex by taking it out of the context of marriage. Pornography is also becoming pervasive. Pornography seeks out users. An individual would only have to check their e-mail to find pornographic material that is unrequested. Incredible amounts of money is to be made on pornography. The more users a peddler of pornography gets to their website, the more money they can make. Pornography is a fifty-seven billion dollar industry. Twelve percent of all websites are pornographic and eight percent of all e-mails are pornographic (Family Safe Media). Our society would be better if pornography was censored.
