To Kill A Mockingbird

             "To Kill A Mockingbird", by Harper Lee is an excellent tale of epic proportions. A matured woman named Scout Finch tells her life story as a young girl growing up in a racist small town. When people read this book, they know the basic conflict (human vs. human, black vs. white) but what they don't see is how the conflict shapes the entire book. This essay is meant to prove that racism plays a very important role in the novel and many others.
             A very important subject in the novel is the Tom Robinson case (the supposed rape of Maryelle Ewell. This event informs the reader about the strong belief of discrimination toward blacks in the small town. Most of the white population of the town takes the side of Bob Ewell who claims he saw the whole crime take place, even though he is a disgrace to all of the members of the town. Without the whole Tom Robinson case, the book would almost have no meaning to it.
             Most white characters in the book try to stay away from black people. The only character that lives with and is in a relationship with a black person (except for the Finch family and Calpernia) would be Dolphus Raymond. Mr. Raymond is married to a black woman. He is able to get away with doing this because people have a reason to think he is a drunkard and is constantly under the influence of alcohol. His children aren't accepted by anybody but their parents, the black community won't accept them because they're half white and the white community won't accept them because they are half black. This shows the reader that most residents citizens of Maycomb don't want anything to do with the opposite colour of themselves.
             Tom Robinson's life would have been taken from him if Atticus Finch chose not to defend him from the crime he has been accused of. All through the book, people call Atticus a "Negro Lover" for his choice. He chose to protect Tom Robinson becau
