In this essay I am going to examine the relationships portrayed in the one act play "between mouthfuls".
             The beginning of the play starts with the Waiter and Mr Pearce. The waiter is polite and friendly with Pearce. Mr Pearce is the opposite and is sharp and impatient with him. When the waiter asks Mr Pearce his name again he gets annoyed. "Pearce. i've just this minute said so." From this you can tell right away the type of person he is and that he is not in a very good mood.
             When Mrs Pearce arrives late for dinner her husband gives the same tone with her and makes a fuss because she has forgotten her glasses. "Why the hell can't you keep your glasses permanently in your handbag" it is clear that Mr Pearce has not time for his wife. He doesn't seem interested in what she's got to say and doesn't listen to her. When Mrs Pearce starts to explain why she has forgotten her glasses he shuts her up by saying "all right, all right, all right" and cuts her off by asking the waiter for the wine list.
             When Polly and Martin enter the restaurant and notice the Pearce' s Polly becomes nervous. It is obvious that she doesn't want to talk to them or be seen by them. You get the impression that Polly doesn't like them too much. Or that she is feeling guilty about something. When she brings the fact up about her being away on holiday Martin seems to get annoyed and they start to disagree about the fact that she went away herself. The waiter then moves over to the pearces table and when he comes back Polly is talking about how good her holiday was and Martin the same as Mr Pearce doesn't pay much attention to her. Then when the waiter mentions the wine list Martin sarcastically answers him "might as well. My wife has just returned from the Mediterranean. She's probably got the taste after three weeks."
