To Kill A Mockingbird

In this essay I discuss the opinions of who the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, think is responsible for the death of Tom Robinson. Responsible, is defined in the Collins Dictionary as, "Having control and authority; reporting or accountable" I illustrate who the immediate Finch family, which includes Atticus, Jem, and Jean-Louis Finch, think is responsible for Tom's death. In addition, I discuss who the black community think killed Tom. Finally I express my opinions on the death of Tom Robinson.
The Finch family have various opinions of why Tom Robinson died. Atticus believes that Tom's death is the fault of the jury and the Ewell family. It's the Ewell's fault in his opinion because Mayella and Bob accused Tom of rape, and brought him to court for a crime he didn't commit. It is then the fault of the jury for not seeing the truth. Atticus had proven to the jury, the best any man could do, that Tom is innocent and still they convicted him. Jem and Scout think mainly like Atticus, and find Tom's death the fault of the Ewell's and the jury. The Finch kids also don't completely understand the situation and in their eyes it may appear that it is Tom's own fault since he did try to run away from prison.
Most of the black community find it's the fault of the whites in Maycomb. Most of the white community treat black people in Maycomb as a lower, less disserving, aggressive race. The blacks in Maycomb learn that if it's a white mans word against a black mans the white man wins. The black community places the responsibility of Tom's death upon the jury and the Ewell's, for the same reasons as Atticus, on the history of Maycomb's black and white relationship, and in addition on Tom himself for trusting and being kind to a white woman.
