To discuss binge drinking, you first need to know what binge drinking is, and it's definition. Binge drinking is when five ( for men ) and four (for women ) or more in a row with in a week. That doesn't sound so bad huh? But it is. In a recent study (1999) was conducted by Harvard University, it was found that 23% of the students were identified as binge drinkers. This has gone up from the 21% in 1997 and the 20% in 1993. (learning success p261) Typically most binge drinkers are white males under the legal drinking age. I found some good news in all of this study, the amount of students who decided to stay away from alcohol had gone up from 15% in 1993 to 19% in 1999. (Learning success p261) Now a lot of students don't think that this a problem, but it is. Students that binge drink are found to do much poorer in school than what they are capable of doing. Many times grades drop as low as a "D" from an "A", scary huh? Nearly two-thirds of the binge drinkers in college have been found to missed class. More than half forgot where they were and what they did. 41% engaged in unplanned sex, and 22% had unprotected sex. 23% got hurt. 22% damaged property. 11% got in trouble with police. (Learning success p261) Binge drinking will also hit you at the bank. According to the study conducted by Harvard University, students spend 5.5 billion on alcohol annually.
             It is very hard for the colleges to try and eliminate this kind of problem on college campuses for many reasons. One, it is impossible to cover a whole campus, even a small one, all at once. If they could, it would take a huge amount of man power. The biggest problem that makes it the hardest is the cheap and easily obtainable beer. This problem helps to fuel the binge drinking problem. The ease of getting alcohol is simple.
