             In Anne's earlier works she was depressed and wrote whatever melancholy things she could think of. As she continued to write her works became harder to interpret, because she used more symbols and more imagery. In her later works especially before her suicide she started to explore questions of religion and faith. She even went as far as questioning the existence of God in some poems. This should give you an idea of how depressed and sad life made her.
             Confessionalism is said to be the biggest part of Anne Sexton's poetry. This is what helps her readers to make that emotional connection with her and feel like they really know her. M.L. Rosenthal (analyst of Anne's work) says, "These poems seemed to me one combination of the romantic and modem tendency to place the literal self more and more at the center of the poem in such a way as to make her psychological vulnerability and shame an embodiment of her civilization." He then concluded by saying,
