Sula is a novel with a lot of death involved in it. It seems as if in every chapter someone else dies or someone else is betrayed. It has a good vs. evil tendency in the book. Nel seems to be the good and Sula seems to be the evil. Nel was raised by her mother to be prim and proper. Sula was raised to the opposite extreme. In the first part of the story Sula's uncle Plum was murdered by his mother Eva. Eva felt that it was her duty to kill plum before the drugs did any more damage. Eva did it out of love for her son. Morrison has a weird way of showing love in her stories. In the first part Hanah asks Eva if she ever loved them. Eva takes offense to this question and recalls all that she did for the children while they were being raised. She even lost her leg so she could feed them and take care of them. She says she does this out of love, the same love that led her to set Plum ablaze.
             Also in the first part Sula accidentally kills Chicken Little. The fact that she didn't tell anyone and attends the funeral without saying a word leads us to believe that Sula is evil. Sula goes so far as to chop off the tip of her own finger to prove a point to the Irish boys. Hannah dies near the end of the first part. She accidentally catches fire and once Eva sees that, Eva launches herself out the window to try and save her daughter. Meanwhile, Sula stands on the porch and watches her mother burn to death, not because she was shocked but because she was interested. Again, it leads us to believe that her heart is pure evil. Nel moves on and marries in the end of the first part of the novel. Sula feels a bit betrayed loosing her best friend and leaves town and does not return for ten years.
             The second part begins ten years later when Sula does return, there is a swarm of robins almost as an omen of her return. This also hints of the evil ways of Sula. She comes back dressed in the riches of a movie star
