In the early 1980's, John Hershey went back to Japan to find the survivors whose story he had told in the book Hiroshima. They had become a part of his life and a conclusion had to written to their stories with the passing of time. These conclusions were written as chapter five of Hiroshima.
             One of the survivors was Hatusuyo Nakamura, a tailor's widow with three children; Toshio, Yaeko, and Myeko. On August 5, 1945 the night before the bomb was dropped Mrs. Nakamura got her children out of bed and brought them to the East Parade Ground. He designated safe area. She feared the B-29's that she could hear approaching. When the planes passed Mrs. Nakamura took her children home only to hear the planes were coming back. Feeling sorry for her exhausted children she stayed home. On the morning of August 6, 1945 Mrs. Nakamura was standing in her kitchen watching her neighbor tear down his house when the bomb was dropped. The force of the blast was so strong the whole family was thrown across the room. Although shaken up and a bit bruised none of them were seriously injured. From that moment on their life's were drastically different. In the explosion the Nakamura's lost everything from the house to their only source of income. The following years were a courageous struggle for the Nakamura's. Mrs. Nakamura suffered from A-bomb syndrome making it extremely difficult for her to work. She earned barely enough to feed her family. She then later fell ill; the doctor told her she had roundworm. She was forced to sell her husbands' sewing machine. That marked one of the saddest moments of her life.
             As time passed the searing experiences of that day gradually receded from the front of their minds, but life was still a struggle for the Nakamura's.
             In 1951 the Nakamura's luck changed for the better. They were given the chance to more into a better house, and rent was only one dollar...
