             Level Two - Writing to the Therapist
             Validation of experience by outside source, feelings are finally heard and uncovered from within.
             Level Three - Creative writing of the event
             Previously suppressed details of the traumatic event come forth, escaping the confines of secrecy.
             Level Four - Sharing creative writing with Therapist
             Graphic, detailed and truthful writing allows the event to be understood from the victim's point of view. Finally their voice is heard and mutual understanding can take place. Experiencing the sights, sounds, and emotions of the traumatic event with a sympathetic witness brings comfort. A sense of safety and trust emerge replacing victimization with empowerment.
             Level Five - Written response from the Therapist
             With an empathetic witness to the pain, new insights begin to replace irrational thoughts of the original event. Comments by the therapist can be read over and over again, allowing assimilation to occur in stages, rather than in the dissociative state that may have accompanied initial exploration of the event. This is especially helpful if replies are thoughtfully worded 'within' the context of the original prose.
             Level Six - Discussion of event in detail
             Careful selection of clients written passages by the therapist, accompanied by targeted questioning, allows for in depth analysis of the actual event, ultimately freeing memories from further suppression. Anxiety increases, but the scale tilts towards release as being worth the initial sympathetic system response. Sustained healing takes place. Use of the SUD scale is extremely helpful in expressing accompanying anxiety levels.
