Crisis + Struggle = Growth
             The Chinese proverb " Crisis + Struggle = Growth" is saying that the outcome of a crisis and a struggle is growth. This means that a person grows when a problem or a crisis occurs in their life. I agree with this proverb. There are two works that prove this proverb to be true, one is the play Thunder on Sycamore Street, by Reginald Rose, and the other is the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.
             In the play Thunder on Sycamore Street we observe a character by the name of Author Hayes. Arthur is struggling with himself and with the moral issue of joining a mob that plans on ordering a man (Joseph Blake) to leave his home because of his marred past. This ordeal bothered Arthur, and it was very hard for him to make his peers know how he felt about this situation. At the end of the play Arthur stood up for himself and for Joe Blake, he did so by standing up for him when everyone was against him. We can see that from all the struggling that Arthur went through throughout the play that the end result was truly growth.
             Another instance in which the "growth" is exhibited as a result of "crisis and struggle" is in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The character in this novel that shows growth as an end result of crisis and struggle is Jem Finch. Jem is a young boy who is forced to grow up because of the major crisis that is taking place around him. His shattering experience at Tom Robinson's trial occurs just as he is entering puberty, a time when life is complicated and traumatic enough. Nevertheless after seeing the unfair destruction of Tom Robinson, Jem now wants to protect the fragile and harmless. This is an act that clearly shows growth.
