Macbeth sleeplessness

             Throughout the play, sleeplessness has been the foundation of every murder which Macbeth and Lady Macbeth commit. For instance, soon after the demise of King Duncan Macbeth states "Ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleep in the affliction...to lie in restless ecstasy" (Act III Scene I) to emphasize how his guilt is taking over his mind and preventing him from getting rest. Not to mention, Macbeth says that after he murdered the king, he thought he heard a voice cry out "Sleep no more...Macbeth does murder sleep."(Act II Scene II) The remorse over the actions committed resulted in Macbeth to become slightly insane and vision illusions such as the "dagger of the mind". He also visions Banquo's ghost returning to haunt him and interrupt his feast as an illusion due to the combination of lack of sleep and guilt which in result make him look suspicious to his surroundings. Duncan, however, is shown to be sleeping in a peaceful manner where neither poison, nor daggers can further reach him. Macbeth, on the other hand, lacks sleep due to his conscience pricking at him which calls attention to the idea that Macbeth "murdered sleep".
             The Three witches were the origin of the main catastrophe of sleeplessness throughout Macbeth's life with their forecast of his future and allowed him to escape his barrier of a thane and to perform measures which ultimately lead him to the throne. The even hypothesized that "Sleep shall neither night nor day...shall he dwindle, peak and pine"(Act I Scene III) claiming that there will indeed be sleeplessness to come. However, Macbeth witnessed "A dagger of the mind, a false creation...from the heat oppressed brain" (Act II Scene I) which accentuated his fear of the death of Duncan.
