hen finally high school comes and the popularity contest has begun. Indicated by Eileen Van Wie "...friends have a big influence on their decision making. Appearance- clothing and hairstyles, use of leisure time; styles of speaking, thinking and acting; and use or nonuse of alcohol, drugs and tobacco are the areas of influence" (43). This is the time of doing what everyone else in the little clique is doing. Friends are still important but the instant that the opportunity arises, friend no longer mean anything if it means rising to the top of the clique. When entering adulthood the amount of true friends is less and the extended time spent usually with friends is now focused on a significant other, school, job, or all three.
             The view on friendship changes as one grows older; a person being a simple playmate can turn into the truest friend. Three teenagers were asked 8 various questions about friendship. The three adolescents were ages thirteen, fourteen and nineteen, two males and one female. Russell, the thirteen year old is in eighth grade and goes to Terra Cotta middle school and loves sports. The fourteen year olds name is Angelica; she is freshman at Temescal Canyon high school and always is a participant on a dance team. Finally we have Justin, he is nineteen years old. He works for a Chevy dealership and the dealership sends him to school to become certified in any area he desires. The questions that were asked were:
             1. I'd like you to tell me about the people in your group of friends. Which friends do you typically hang out with after school? On weekends? Which friends might you invite to a party?
             ...
