Working can be very gratifying when one is attempting to fulfill their aspirations in life. The life of a white-collar son is very different from that of a blue-collar father, the goal of the elder is to provide as best as possible for his children whereas the goals of the son is to do what he wants with his life. As explicated in Alfred Lubrano's essay, "Bricklayer's Boy," it can either bring the two people closer together or push them apart.
             One contrast presented in this essay is in Paragraph 1. While the author is inside all the buildings, his father is outside of them and never permitted to enter. This is presented as a difference in class. The author of the essay is allowed into the university buildings because he is a student. The building is symbolic of what the father has done for his son. The father worked all his life to provide for his family and eventually be financially stable enough to give his offspring a better life than he himself had.
             Father and son have differing objectives or loyalties. Lubrano states that his father put aside his own dream to be a singer/actor to follow in his own father's path. The family needed money, so Lubrano's father did what was necessary to make it available. After all Lubrano's father had sacrificed for him to have a decent education and be wealthy later on in life, Lubrano himself went to work as a writer at an unknown newspaper.
             Although Lubrano's parents had not pursued their own dreams, they anticipated that their children would accomplish all their aspirations. Our parents look to us to carry out our dreams as a means for them to feel that they too carried out theirs in a way. Where they did not have an opportunity to achieve their own desires, our parents feel that they should give us the opportunity to do what they could not do themselves.
