Human Cloning

Every day, new scientific breakthroughs are made. In recent years, many of these breakthroughs are in the field of human genetics. Scientists are discovering more and more things about the makeup of DNA, birth defects, cancers, and new possible genetic-altering procedures such as cloning. Along with these new discoveries comes a great deal of controversy. Should humans be messing around with people's natural genes? Should we be essentially "playing God"? These questions along with medical concern are currently boiling inside the minds of people today. People want to know exactly what human cloning is, and how it could potentially help or destroy the most dominant species on earth.
Cloning is a procedure that the scientific world has just made a "dent" in. Technically, the cloning of a human has not happened so far, but cloning of animals such as sheep and some birds has been accomplished. The unique thing about cloning is that it can occur with only one parent. Cloning happens in several steps. First, the scientist has to collect an egg from the chosen female of the certain species. Then the nucleus is removed from the cell, extracting the genetic code. The scientist then takes a skin cell from the mother. The skin cell is inserted into the empty egg. The scientist applies a small electrical pulse that fuses the skin cell with the empty egg. This forms a new single egg with the skin cell's nucleus. A second electrical pulse makes the cell begin to divide. The dividing cell is placed back into the uterus of the mother, and continues to grow as an embryo. A clone will then be born.
The process actually sounds quite simple and error proof, yet there are still many risks in cloning. Recent studies show that "500 cloned embryos were implanted into 250 cows, but only 110 resulted in pregnancy. Some of the pregnancies were not carries to term, and many calves died at birth or soon af
