For an individual who chooses an education more tailored to their personal interests then to the job market demand or popularity their chances of social and career advancement may be inhibited. The choice to educate oneself in a personally satisfying avenue may or may not be a career that is accompanied with social class or in high demand. One may choose to reject social advancement to pursue an education, which appeals to them. If one prefers to obtain a career with good future prospects, tailoring their education to a highly demanded field will probably provide the individual with added chance of social advancement.
