Final Draft of The House on Mango Street
             Throughout the world there are many children who grow up in extreme poverty and under disgraceful economical conditions. Consequently, a sense of inferiority will eventually penetrate into the child's self-concept damaging their self-esteem. Once that the self-concept is subjected to a sense of inferiority the mind of the child will most likely live up to the low standards that society has set for him/her. Esperanza, the main figure of Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street, is an exception to the children who grow up under outrageous economical conditions and consequently live up the low expectations of society. Although, all her life she had lived under extreme poverty, the flame of progression, the yearn for being someone valuable in society, still burst in her heart. Poverty seems to be taking its toll on Esperanza's life. But despite these disadvantages her hope for making progress in life remains firm because she believes that she is to strong to be kept in Mango Street forever (110).
             Esperanza is an exception to the average children who fail to succeed due to their economical disadvantages because she did not lost faith in that soon she was going to escape out of the poor conditions in which she lived. Esperanza sees herself leaving the house on mango Street, the house that she belonged but not belonged to (110). Esperanza recognizes the fact that she lives in the house of Mango Street, but she does not get accustomed to the fact that she belongs there. She repeatedly mentions that she does not belong to the house of Mango Street, implying that she belongs to a better place. Although she lives in the house of Mango Street she is conscious that she will have a house of her own and a porch (108). She believes that she is too strong to be kept in Mango Street forever.
