This day in age it seems like everything is image oriented. This is where "the eating
disorder" emerges. I believe that an eating disorder is more than anorexia or bulimia, it is
also crash dieting. My reasoning behind this is because as anorexia and bulimia ruin ones
body so does crash dieting. In this article "Yo-yo Dieting Can Lower Levels Of Good
Cholesterol" crash dieting or cycling is defined as a person who has lost at least ten
pounds intentionally at least three times.
I bring this article to your attention because this is not healthy. Yes, a heavy
person losing weight is a good thing, but only if they are doing it correctly. Weight
cycling has been found to have tremendous damaging effects on "good" cholesterol.
Though I believe greatly in this article and what it is presenting, I repeatedly think back to
our class discussions and wonder if things like this are genetic or not. From this course
I've learned many things one of which is that there is a gene for almost everything. So I
raise the question, If there is a gene for everything isn't it true that people who have the
gene for "bad" cholesterol will at some time be diagnosed. This is not determinate on if
the individual was a crash dieter of not. Just because "bad" cholesterol is found after
dieting doesn't mean it was caused by the crash dieting. It could more realistically be
presented as a promoter. Meaning if you were to have bad cholesterol you would get it
no matter what, but it is because you crash dieted that it showed up sooner.
There are many environmental influences that could be direct or indirect which
highly effect the way a gene is expressed. For "bad" cholesterol, crash dieting is just an
indirect factor. The gene is there and it could show up sooner rather than latter if you
don't take care of yourself. Watchin...
