Having good dialogue in a written piece is the key element to producing excellent work, but it's easier said than done. Bad dialogue can break the mood of the story, or confuse the reader. There are three easy steps to writing impeccable dialogue, and once they are mastered your dialogue will become much improved.
             The first step to writing good dialogue is mouthing out your words. By doing this you will hear what your dialogue sounds like. You will also be able to recognize if certain words do not sound well together, or if words are out of place. If your dialogue is smooth and makes sense when you read it to yourself, then it will be comprehendible to the reader.
             Step two to writing good dialogue is being able to define each character by what they say. Dialogue is a device for digging deeper in the souls of your characters, and revealing things about them that a description can't do. Define their mannerisms through what they say. If you have a nervous character, add a stutter to the dialogue. If you have a kind-hearted character, let their sweetness be reflected in the their words. Perhaps alter a characters way of speaking for entertainment. In the old days, actors talked in ways that normal people did not, making their characters more interesting.
             The last step in creating great dialogue is to put people together who have conflicts. A super charged atmosphere adds entertainment. Good dialogue had to do with what is said, and what is not said, so feel free to leave some mystery in your conversations. When you are deciding what characters to have talking you should also take into consideration everything about them: their clothes, personality, and voice tones.
             Make use of these three steps and you will be on your way to writing engaging dialogue. Dialogue is refreshing change of pace from description, and it will make your pieces more intriguing for your readers in the future!
