Irresponsibility in Product Advertising: Who Pays?

e are no hangovers, no weight gain, no surprise pregnancies, and no problems with the spouse. The infrastructure of these ads is desire and we submit to the notion of implied need with our wallets extended. We like the ability to Super Size, upgrade, substitute, and deluxe-ify everything, ranging from foodstuffs to fiancées. More is better and we thrive on it- by spending beyond our means and buying more than we need. It is no wonder that our country is the number one in world consumption, as well as in debt per capita (CIA, 2004).
             Corporations, swaddled comfortably in our incomes, are subliminal masters of disguise. Americans' propensity towards gluttony is a surefire target for advertisers hungry to feed our tendencies whilst creating a dependency on their products. This relationship is crafted out of necessity; what is good enough today, will not suffice tomorrow. To keep on top of our changing demands, food service gurus turn to the younger generations of customers to put the power of change in their hands. With the
             help of the coinciding 2001 movie release of SpyKids, fast food mega-giant McDonald's added MightyKids to it's menu. These meals are marketed around the toy that comes with it, and offer preschool to tween-aged kids larger portions. This addition was due largely in part to consumer demand from kids who felt they were "too old for a Happy Meal, but not old enough for a Quarter Pounder" (McDonald's Corporation, 2001). The gem of this marketing idea lies in McDonald Corp's blatant targeting of a younger, less-aware audience. Banking on the premise that kids enjoy making their own decisions, and aren't terribly concerned about calories, McDonald's wins over a new generation of Big Mac addicts with a three-cent magnifying glass and an extra hamburger patty.
