1. The Vikings were originally from Scandinavia. They made their way to what is present-day Iceland, Greenland, England, parts of Norway and Sweden. The place where they always seemed to have lived, was on the coast of a mainland. I think they lived on the coast so that they can have a quick escape route and a safe harbor. The Vikings were always out to sea.
             2. The Viking society was divided into three classes, based on wealth and land ownership. A king or chief ruled over each community. Below him were the rich noblemen or jarls. Farmers, merchants and craftsmen were known as karls. At the bottom of the social ladder were the thralls, slaves captured in raids. A council governed each community, meeting to settle disputes and judge criminals.
             Most Vikings made livings by fishing, farming, and hunting, with short periods away from home for raids. Women were exceptional weavers and embroiderers. Farmers grew oats, barley, rye, vegetables and fruits. They raised cattle, pigs, sheep and goats.
             Their houses are often called longhouses. Most houses had only one room with very little furniture. With no windows and only a small hole in the roof to release the smoke of the cooking fire, these homes were dark and smelly inside.
             3. Some famous Vikings are Bijarni Herjolfson, who was the first European to see the coast of North America, Erik "the Red" Thorvaldsson, who founded Greenland colony. Gudrid "the wide-traveled" Thorbjarnardottir, was the mother of the first European child born in North America. There was Leif "the Lucky" Eriksson, who became the first European to set foot in North America. Snorri Thorfinnson, the son of Gudrid, was the first European born in North America. Thorvald Ericksson became the first European to encounter Native Americans. Those are some famous Vikings.
