             Ultimately, Gene is a demon in a sense that he would think about someone and think the wrong side of him/her. He thought that Finny was insidious enough to attempt to pull his grades down and surpass him. Such evil and wrong thoughts were caused by insecurities that give a misunderstood understanding of things. In addition, these insecurities cause wars, where countries fight each other just to secure their position on the globe instead of peacefully settling conflicts and disputes through negotiation. This is because man is unrelenting and greedy, always wanting the best out of everything. This is how wars start, because neither country is willing to give up anything for peace.
             Gene's treacherous conspiracy caused great enmity in his relationship with Finny simply because of his impure and immature thoughts, bent naturally on evil. He would believe that "Finny was a den of lonely, selfish ambition (807b)," because he couldn't bring himself to even trust his best friend. Even when Gene realized the truth about Finny's character (809), he jounced the limb of the tree and caused his "friend" to fall and break his limb. His actions point at his lack of self-confidence and how he sets about suppressing this weakness by causing his friend's downfall.
