"Rather than viewing humankind as helpless pawns of the evolutionary process, Ward believed that individuals and government could shape the future through eradication of poverty and education of the masses." (Gale Research). After thoroughly studying Sumner's work, Ward wrote a book, in which, the last third was entirely devoted to disproving Sumner's work. In one instance, Sumner had called genius hereditary. Ward challenged this assertion stating that all children have access to different schooling, as those in the wealthier communities have access to better schooling, those in the poorer communities have access to worse, or no schooling (Hofstadter, 168). The final blow delivered by Ward was his election as president to the American Sociological Society, in 1906 (Hofstadter, 156).
