Multiculturalism

            The United States of America are considered a nation of immigrants, most of them having traditionally come from Europe.
             Therefore, the Whites form the ethnic majority, but African Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans all having their own way of life have influenced the American culture, which was primarily based on characteristic features of Western Europe for a long time.
             As a consequence of the growing number of the last two minorities I mentioned that represent according to the placement nine respectively four percent of the population result various aspects to take into account.
             For this reason I will consider the effects this new multiculturalism confronting American society has before presenting my own opinion on this topic.
             For most of America's history, the country's door was open to the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. And it remained a strong magnet to immigrants by offering jobs and land as well as religious and political freedom.
             In fact, between 1840 and 1940, almost 40 million people came ashore to begin a new life, but despite the immigrants coming from eastern and southern Europe, China and Japan in the late 19th and early 20th century, and in spite of the large African American population white European immigration was favored while Asian immigration was restricted by the "Chinese Exclusion Act" from 1882 and the "Gentlemen's Agreement" from 1907 until the "Immigration Act" granted equal quotas for all countries in 1965.
             During the past 25 years Latin America and Asian countries have provided the largest share of immigrants.
             Hence, cultural and physical differences became more obvious leading ethnic groups to stay together so that the idea of a "melting pot" gave way to that of a "salad bowl" in which each group maintains its own identity, thus for instance in California the white majority has been losing its dominance.
