I have read the short story Rules of the Game from The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan. It is a story about a young girl born in 1951. She had been spending a Christmas with her family at the church with many other families exchanging gifts. Her brother had been given a gift of a chess board that he and his brother had been messing around with when she found a great interest in the idea of chess. She practiced playing against her brothers and became very good at it. She later started playing in local chess tournaments in the city and started to beat everyone she played against. She went all the way to the championship of chess players and won a trophy for her skill in chess. This had caused a lot of trouble for her and her family, her mother had no concern for chess and thought of it as a waste of her time. She did not listen to her mother and after she had began to win the tournaments, her mother changed her mind and wanted her to continue. It is a very good story about her life as a child starting in a new world since they had just recently moved to the US. At the end of the story it shows that she had changed the way her mother and siblings thought about things and she had found new pride in herself. I would recommend this story to anyone that enjoys a good short story. I found it very interesting and I think anybody would.
