The way history is taught to children today is very wrong in my opinion. They try to turn it around and make
it seem as though it all happened in a very easy kind way. Even though it might have been brutal and wrong. The
children's book that I chose was Christopher Columbus by Clara Ingraham Judson. The rating that I gave the book
was a 6. The rendetion of the telling of the exploration of the Americas by Columbus I rated it a 6 because all the
facts were correct but they were de-emphasized and it made Columbus to be a hero all though it did show how he
was very persistent and never gave up on what he believed in.

facts were correct but they were de-emphasized. In this particular book the biggest issue that was de-emphasized
was when they arrived in America. They said how Columbus saw brown skin people but nothing else. The book did
not mention the Natives' feelings, how they reacted to the newcomers, or how they first approached eachother. The
failed to put in the text about how the Natives were afraid of these different looking people. The difference in the
way they dressed, spoke, and their belongings were frightening and surprising to the Natives.

Columbus to be a hero. In this story he was portrayed as a person who had all the best intentions and actions. Not
once in the story did he make or do anything wrong that the book didn't make right. It is true that his crew lost faith
in him on pages 26 and 27 but in the end he came through. He always wins the reader back with winning in the long
run. Although he was let down by the king of Portugal on pages 19 and 20 he came through and was given a chance
by the king and queen of spain on pages 21-23. They
