             Do you ever feel as though your life is worse than everyone else's in the world? As soon as Francie was born, she began her life long struggle to survive. The conflicts in her life and in those of her family members' lives cause others to already judge her at a young age. In the book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, man versus society conflicts are revealed in Johnny Nolan's love of alcohol and his job preferences, Aunt Sissy Rommely's mode of marrying and divorcing, and Francie Nolan's unfair treatment due to her social standing.
             One of the conflicts in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is Johnny Nolan versus society. " Johnny celebrated his voting birthday by getting drunk for three days." Johnny, Mr. Nolan, drank large amounts of alcohol nightly. Many people in Brooklyn looked down upon him because of his extreme alcohol addiction. Also, a great number of adults felt as though Johnny should have gotten a permanent job instead of searching for a new waiter/entertainer position every night or so. Still others disliked Johnny because of how he spent his money. He used his tips to buy alcohol. In addition, nearly all of the rest of Johnny's earnings were spent on his clothing instead of being used to purchase necessities for his children.
             The fact that Sissy Rommely married at fourteen was the beginning of another conflict, Sissy versus Society. "At fourteen, she was going with a fireman of twenty-five. Because he licked her father instead of the other way around, this romance ended in the
             fireman marrying Sissy." Not only was it tradition for Rommelys to marry in a church, it was also a common tradition in Brooklyn. When Sissy married for the second time, not in a church, but in city hall, many shunned her. To make things worse, Sissy and her husband divorced soon after, which was even more unheard-of.
