(Murtageh 12) The Iroquois believe light a goodness to be one and the same. Therefore the light begets itself and gives itself only to one who follows the ways of the light, or the natural, good paths in the world. The evil twin is condemned to darkness because he was greedy for the light. This creation of a dark twin condemned to hell and twin of light who will remain above has three levels of significance. The first is the equality of dark and light. These are two equally powerful and equally important forces and they create night and day, sun and moon. They are the opposites of each other yet they are whole when united. Secondly we have the explanation for the physical reality of night and day in the story of the twins.
