Although sympathy is shown for Lesley not enough is shown for her to be entitled to the first hit. This is peculiar to the reader as they are meant to be Lesley's friends, Yet here it is reinforced that heroin is their main and only priority.

             Visceral, sublime, subtle and outrageous, insanity and sanity compete for subsistence in a place of dying and fighting for life where life or living is anathema. This race through anti-paradise appears to be what the group of junkie outcasts have in common and the basis of what their friendship is upon. All related by wounded rapture human degradation, abuse, disposable humanity and violence. The main characters appear to be strangely aware of this and realise they use their so called friends, yet are inclined to hold on to this. As their relationship with those in similar predicaments appears to be the only normal relationship in their life they can hold on to.
