Parenting is not a fun and easy thing to do sometimes especially with teenagers. In the book The Chosen by Chaim Potok, Danny's father Reb. Saunders is a very religious Hacidic Jewish man who fails to communicate with his son throughout his childhood. With Danny desperately in search of what to do with his life (to be a rabbi or not), he becomes friends with Reuven, a typical Jewish boy in Brooklyn New York. Reb Saunders was a very clever father and Rebbi.
             Mr. Saunders was a very work-based man. He was constantly studying the Talmud and never really had the time or desire to communicate with his son Danny except about religion. Reb Saunders knew that Danny had been reading non-religious books and exploring other ways of life and purposely didn't talk to his son for a reason that he knew his son was very curious and let him explore. Rebbi wanted the best for Danny deep inside and let him safely explore other lifestyles. It took great mental strength from Mr. Saunders to control himself from stopping his son yet it showed a very clever and smart thinking.
             All of Danny Saunders childhood was spent not talking to his father except for the tora. Mr. Saunders was very religious and stuck to a very routine work schedule. He had great understanding and knowledge for the tora and the Hacidic religion itself. The Hacidic Jews that attended his synagogue really could confide confidence in the Rebbi and trusted him. I don't think that the people of the synagogue would rather have any other man be there messenger to the Lord.
             In a strong Hacidic society and environment as such as the one danny drew up in, it wasnt morally correct to socialize with non-Hacids such as Reuven. Mr. Saunders was very calm and very accepting to Reuven. He was overall in support of Danny and Reuven's friendship because he knew it was for the greater good of his son.
